5. Use place value concepts to represent whole numbers using numerals, words, expanded notation and physical models with ones and tens. For example:
a. Develop a system to group and count by twos, fives and tens.
b. Identify patterns and groupings in a 100’s chart and relate to place value concepts.
c. Recognize the first digit of a two-digit number as the most important to indicate size of a number and the nearness to 10 or 100.

Funbrain is a great site for games that practice skills. Students can use this site independently. Connect the Dots enables students to choose a level of difficulty and use skip counting to connect the dots and make a picture.

Tens and Ones Game from Dositey

This online activity teaches place value. The student is shown bags (for 10) and counters (for 1) and needs to determine the number being represented. The problems are randomly generated for replayability.

This cute online game from ICT Games teaches about counting by 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 100. In the game there are flowers numbered in a pattern, but one number is missing. You need to pick the butterfly with the correct number to fill in the sequence.

This cute online game from ICT Games teaches about place value. In the game, Cuisannaire rods are used to model a number, and you need to click the bubble that contains that number. If you are right, you'll see a dolphin. If you are wrong, the shark will bite your boat.

Counting Machine

This simple activity is a counting machine. Students can start at any number. They can choose the interval in which the machine will count. Then the students can have the machine count. There are many uses for this activity, either with individuals, pairs or groups. They can use it as a demonstration or guess the next number and then use the machine to check themselves. This is a simple concept but one the students will enjoy.

This is a simple representational game. It shows shapes in groups of tens and ones. The students choose the number that represents the total of the groups. It is easy for students to use independently and attractive so they will want to use it.

This is a game of catching falling leaves in a basket. The scoring of the game involves collecting single leaves until you have ten and then they are moved into the tens column. If you miss leaves, numbers are subtracted. This demonstrates making tens and taking them apart. This is a simple game students can do independently.
